What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a new treatment called GXV813, a potential drug for acute episodes of schizophrenia, which involve sudden increases in symptoms like hallucinations or delusions. Researchers aim to determine if GXV813 is safe and effective compared to a placebo, which contains no active medicine. The trial seeks individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia who are currently experiencing a severe symptom increase requiring hospitalization. Participants must be willing to remain in a hospital for most of the study duration. As a Phase 2 trial, the research focuses on measuring the treatment's effectiveness in an initial, smaller group of people.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial does not specify if you must stop taking your current medications, but you cannot participate if you need to take certain drugs that affect liver enzymes (CYP3A4 inhibitors and inducers). Also, if you're on a long-acting injectable antipsychotic, you must not have had a dose in the last 12 weeks (or 24 weeks for INVEGA TRINZA®).

Is there any evidence suggesting that GXV813 is likely to be safe for humans?

In a previous study, researchers examined GXV813 for treating schizophrenia, focusing on its safety for people. The results showed that GXV813 is generally well-tolerated, with most participants not experiencing severe side effects. Some individuals did encounter minor issues, but these were uncommon.

The study did not report any serious problems that would cause major concern, suggesting that GXV813 is safe for treating sudden episodes of schizophrenia. However, this information comes from ongoing research. Further studies will continue to monitor safety and side effects.12345

Why do researchers think this study treatment might be promising for schizophrenia?

GXV813 is unique because it offers a novel approach to treating schizophrenia. Unlike standard treatments that primarily target dopamine receptors, GXV813 targets a different pathway, which could lead to improved symptom control and fewer side effects. Researchers are excited about this treatment because it may provide better outcomes for patients who do not respond well to existing medications. Additionally, GXV813 is administered orally, which makes it convenient for patients to take as part of their daily routine.

What evidence suggests that GXV813 might be an effective treatment for schizophrenia?

Research has shown that GXV813, which participants in this trial may receive, might help treat schizophrenia by targeting specific brain areas involved in mood and thinking. Studies involving individuals with schizophrenia have found that GXV813 can reduce symptoms during intense episodes. It acts on brain pathways believed to be overactive in schizophrenia. Early results indicate that GXV813 is safe and effective, with patients experiencing fewer symptoms and improved overall functioning. Although more research is necessary, these early findings offer promise for those experiencing acute schizophrenia episodes.13456

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for adults aged 18-65 who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, are currently hospitalized due to a recent worsening of symptoms (within the last 2 months), and can give consent and stay in the hospital during the study.
