Emotion Regulation for Childhood Obesity
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to determine if teaching teens to manage their emotions and track their mood and behavior (emotion regulation and self-monitoring) can help address overweight and obesity. Researchers seek to understand if these strategies can alter biases and improve health and behavior. Participants will either receive educational handouts or join weekly online group sessions for four weeks. Teens aged 11-14 who are above a certain weight (BMI at or above the 85th percentile) and live near Lubbock County, TX, may be suitable candidates. As a Phase 1 and Phase 2 trial, this research focuses on understanding how the treatment works in people and measuring its effectiveness in an initial, smaller group.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It might be best to discuss this with the trial coordinators.
Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?
Research has shown that learning to manage emotions and track one's behavior can aid in addressing obesity. Studies have found that teenagers who improve their emotional handling skills tend to lose weight more effectively. This suggests the method is generally safe, as participants typically did not report major negative effects.
Moreover, strategies for managing emotions have been linked to a lower risk of obesity in children. This indicates that learning to handle emotions might assist with weight management without causing harm.
Although direct information on side effects is limited, the continued interest in this approach suggests it is likely safe. Participants in other studies have engaged in similar programs successfully, indicating it is generally safe for young people.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Emotion Regulation and Self-Monitoring Program for childhood obesity because it targets emotional factors that contribute to unhealthy behaviors. Unlike traditional treatments that primarily focus on diet and exercise, this program helps kids understand and manage their emotions, which can lead to better decision-making and lifestyle choices. The use of telehealth sessions and daily self-monitoring is also a novel approach, making it accessible and easy to integrate into daily life. By addressing the emotional triggers that lead to overeating and inactivity, this program could offer a more holistic and sustainable path to managing obesity in children.
What evidence suggests that emotion regulation and self-monitoring might be an effective treatment for childhood obesity?
Research has shown that learning to handle emotions can help manage childhood obesity. In this trial, participants in the Emotion Regulation and Self-Monitoring Program will receive an active intervention that includes four weeks of emotion regulation and self-monitoring. Studies have found that when children learn to manage their emotions, they often achieve healthier weights. For instance, teens who participated in programs to improve emotion control experienced greater reductions in their Body Mass Index (BMI) than those who did not. Additionally, learning skills like controlling impulses and handling stress is linked to lower obesity rates. This evidence suggests that focusing on managing emotions and tracking behaviors might help teens improve their health and better manage their weight.23678

This trial is for English-speaking kids ages 11-14 who live in or near Lubbock County, TX, have internet access, and are overweight or obese (BMI at or above the 85th percentile).Inclusion Criteria
Timeline for a Trial Participant
Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Treatment
Participants receive either educational handouts or attend weekly telehealth group sessions for emotion regulation and self-monitoring for 4 weeks
Follow-up
Participants return to complete the same questionnaires, fMRI, and blood draw procedures to monitor changes
What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?
Interventions
- Emotion regulation and self-monitoring
Trial Overview
The study compares two approaches: one group gets weekly online sessions teaching emotion regulation and self-monitoring skills; the other receives educational handouts about obesity. Both groups complete surveys, blood draws, and brain scans before and after.

Experimental Treatment
Active Control
Participants randomized to this condition will receive an active intervention which includes 4 weeks of an emotion regulation and self-monitoring program. Participants will attend telehealth group sessions once weekly and be asked to self-monitor their mood and health behaviors daily between sessions.
Participants assigned to the psychoeducation control group will receive informational handouts about overweight and obesity, including current daily sleep, diet, and physical activity recommendations to prevent/treat overweight and obesity.
