Lifitegrast + Perfluorohexyloctane for Dry Eye Syndrome
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a new combination treatment for people with dry eye disease, which causes symptoms like burning and stinging. Researchers aim to determine if Lifitegrast (an eye drop medication) combined with Perfluorohexyloctane (an eye lubricant) reduces these symptoms more effectively than other treatments or a placebo (a harmless pill). The trial includes several groups receiving different treatments to compare results. People who have used over-the-counter eye drops or gels for dry eye symptoms in the past month might be suitable for this study. As a Phase 2 trial, this research focuses on measuring the treatment's effectiveness in an initial, smaller group, offering participants a chance to contribute to important findings.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
Yes, you will need to stop using any current topical dry eye treatments to participate in this trial.
Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?
Previous studies have shown that Lifitegrast is safe and well-tolerated. Researchers reported no unexpected or serious eye-related side effects. Common side effects were mild, such as temporary irritation at the application site. The FDA has already approved Lifitegrast for treating dry eye disease, supporting its safety.
Perfluorohexyloctane also maintains a good safety record. A small number of patients experienced minor side effects, but overall, it is well-tolerated. The FDA's approval of Perfluorohexyloctane for dry eye disease further confirms its safety.
Both treatments have demonstrated a strong history of safety in past research.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial's treatments?
Most treatments for dry eye syndrome, like artificial tears and anti-inflammatory eye drops, work by lubricating the eyes or reducing inflammation. However, Lifitegrast is unique because it directly targets a protein interaction that contributes to inflammation, potentially offering more precise control over the inflammatory response. Additionally, combining Lifitegrast with Perfluorohexyloctane could enhance the eye's surface stability, providing a dual approach to tackle both inflammation and tear film stability. Researchers are excited about this treatment because it offers a novel mechanism that might provide faster and more effective relief for patients with dry eye syndrome compared to existing options.
What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for dry eye disease?
This trial will evaluate Lifitegrast and Perfluorohexyloctane as separate treatments for dry eye syndrome. Studies have shown that Lifitegrast significantly improves symptoms of dry eye disease. In various trials, patients reported less eye dryness and healthier eyes with Lifitegrast compared to a placebo. Specifically, about two-thirds of patients experienced almost complete symptom relief within a few months of starting Lifitegrast.
Research indicates that Perfluorohexyloctane effectively reduces signs and symptoms of dry eye disease, particularly related to Meibomian gland dysfunction, a condition affecting oil glands in the eyelids that helps keep eyes moist. Patients using Perfluorohexyloctane experienced significant improvements in eye comfort and fewer symptoms. Both treatments show promise for those suffering from dry eye disease and are being tested in this trial.46789Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for adults 18 or older who have had dry eye disease in both eyes for at least 6 months, meet certain symptom criteria, and have used over-the-counter eye drops recently. Participants must be able to follow study instructions and attend all visits.Inclusion Criteria

Trial Overview
The study compares a new fixed-dose combination of Lifitegrast/Perfluorohexyloctane with Perfluorohexyloctane alone, Lifitegrast alone, and a placebo (vehicle) to see which works best for treating dry eye symptoms over four weeks. Treatments are given twice daily.
