What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests ASP2020, a treatment using human stem cells, for individuals with Stargardt disease (STGD) and similar macular dystrophies. The researchers aim to determine if these stem cells can safely replace damaged retinal cells and improve vision. Participants will receive a single injection of ASP2020 into the eye, with the trial monitoring any side effects and changes in vision. It is suitable for those diagnosed with macular dystrophy related to the ABCA4 gene or similar genes, who experience central vision loss affecting daily activities like reading or recognizing faces. As a Phase 1 trial, the research focuses on understanding how the treatment works in people, offering participants the opportunity to be among the first to receive this innovative treatment.

Is there any evidence suggesting that ASP2020 is likely to be safe for humans?

Research shows that ASP2020 is just beginning human testing. As this is an early trial, ASP2020 has not been tried in humans before. Therefore, the researchers do not yet know how well people can tolerate it or what side effects might occur. However, the trial will closely monitor participants for any health issues after they receive the treatment, ensuring their safety as the study progresses.

Since this is an early phase study, the primary goal is to learn about safety. While positive results are hoped for, the researchers are still gathering and verifying safety information. Doctors will regularly check participants to quickly identify and address any problems.12345

Why do researchers think this study treatment might be promising?

Researchers are excited about ASP2020 for Stargardt Disease because it offers a novel approach compared to existing treatments like vitamin A supplementation and supportive care. ASP2020 is administered directly into the subretinal space, targeting the disease more precisely. This direct delivery method is combined with triamcinolone acetonide, which helps reduce inflammation, potentially enhancing the treatment's effectiveness. Such a targeted approach could offer better outcomes and reduce disease progression, which is why there is significant interest in its potential.

What evidence suggests that ASP2020 might be an effective treatment for Stargardt disease?

Research has shown that stem cell treatments, such as ASP2020, hold potential for eye conditions similar to Stargardt disease. Specifically, some studies found that over 60% of patients with similar conditions experienced vision improvements after stem cell therapy. These stem cells aim to replace damaged cells in the retina, potentially improving vision. Although ASP2020 remains in the early stages of development, it builds on promising initial results from other stem cell treatments. The hope is that ASP2020 could provide a new way to help people with Stargardt disease regain some vision.13678

Trial Overview

The study tests a single injection of ASP2020—stem cells turned into macular cells—under the retina during surgery under anesthesia. The main goal is to check safety at different doses in people with Stargardt-type macular dystrophies over about one year.
