Atirmociclib for Liver Disease
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores how the new drug, atirmociclib, behaves in the body and assesses its safety for people with various liver conditions. Participants will take the medicine orally, and researchers will collect blood samples to determine how the liver processes the drug. The trial suits adults with normal liver function or stable liver disease that doesn’t change quickly. Participants will spend about a week in the clinic, depending on their liver health, with follow-ups after discharge. As a Phase 1 trial, this research aims to understand how the treatment works in people, offering participants the opportunity to be among the first to receive this new drug.
Is there any evidence suggesting that atirmociclib is likely to be safe for humans?
Research has shown that atirmociclib has been studied for its safety and mechanism of action. Early results suggest it is generally well-tolerated. One study found that when combined with letrozole, a cancer treatment, atirmociclib maintained a good safety record over about two years of follow-up. Although considered safe, atirmociclib, like many medicines, can have side effects. Some other medicines in the same group (CDK4/6 inhibitors) have been linked to liver problems. However, this does not mean atirmociclib will cause the same issues. It is important to remember that researchers are still studying atirmociclib to fully understand its safety.12345
Why do researchers think this study treatment might be promising?
Atirmociclib is unique because it targets liver disease through a novel mechanism, acting as a cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor. While traditional treatments for liver disease often focus on managing symptoms or slowing disease progression through medications like antiviral drugs or steroids, Atirmociclib directly interferes with the cellular processes that contribute to liver damage. Researchers are excited about this treatment because it offers a new approach that could potentially halt or reverse liver disease at the cellular level, providing hope for more effective management of the condition.
What evidence suggests that atirmociclib might be an effective treatment for liver disease?
Research has shown that atirmociclib yields promising results for treating certain breast cancers. One study demonstrated that combining atirmociclib with another drug helped patients live longer without cancer progression. Another study found the treatment effective in shrinking or controlling tumors. Although these studies focused on breast cancer, they suggest that atirmociclib could be explored for other conditions, such as liver disease. By targeting specific proteins involved in cell growth, it might help manage liver issues. In this trial, participants will be divided into groups based on liver function—normal hepatic function, mild hepatic impairment, moderate hepatic impairment, and severe hepatic impairment—to understand how atirmociclib works in the body across different levels of liver health.36789
