What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores a new method to manage essential tremor, a condition causing uncontrollable shaking, typically in the hands. The study compares a new image-guided technique for deep brain stimulation (DBS) programming with standard clinical settings to determine which better reduces tremors and improves patient satisfaction. Participants must have essential tremor and a specific type of DBS device already implanted. As a Phase 1 trial, the research focuses on understanding how the treatment works in people, offering participants the opportunity to be among the first to receive this innovative approach.

Do I need to stop my current medications for the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What prior data suggests that image-guided DBS programming is safe for essential tremor?

Research has shown that using images to guide deep brain stimulation (DBS) is generally safe and well-tolerated for treating essential tremor. One study found that fully automated DBS programming, part of this image-guided method, works well and is safe. It achieves results similar to traditional methods without adding extra risk. Additionally, the FDA approved DBS for essential tremor in 1997, demonstrating a long history of safety. Although this study is in its early stages, with safety as a key focus, existing evidence supports the treatment's safety.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about image-guided DBS programming for essential tremor because it offers a way to personalize treatment more precisely than current options. Unlike traditional deep brain stimulation, which relies on standard settings, this technique uses imaging technology to tailor the programming to each patient's unique brain structure. This could lead to better control of tremors with fewer side effects, as the approach aims to optimize the placement and intensity of the stimulation. By enhancing the accuracy of DBS, this method has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life for those with essential tremor.

What evidence suggests that image-guided DBS programming is effective for essential tremor?

This trial will compare two programming methods for deep brain stimulation (DBS) in treating essential tremor: clinical-based standard settings (Program A) and image-guided programming (Program B). Research has shown that image-guided DBS can effectively reduce tremors in people with essential tremor. Studies have found that this method greatly improves hand movement and tremor control. Image-guided DBS uses advanced imaging to accurately target specific brain areas, enhancing symptom management. Early results suggest that patients experience a better quality of life with this approach. Additionally, image-guided programming can make the process more efficient for both doctors and patients, leading to higher satisfaction.12678

  • Image-Guided DBS Programming

Trial Overview

The study compares two ways of adjusting deep brain stimulation (DBS) settings: one uses advanced imaging techniques (image-guided programming), while the other follows standard clinical methods. The goal is to see which method better reduces tremors and improves patient satisfaction.
