What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to help caregivers of people with dementia better manage the condition's behavioral and psychological symptoms. The study compares two methods: structured retrieval practice (a learning technique) and reading material. It targets informal caregivers who currently care for someone with dementia and have computer access. The goal is to determine which method more effectively enhances caregivers' ability to apply their knowledge in real-world situations. As a Phase 1 trial, the research focuses on understanding how the treatment works in people, offering participants a chance to contribute to groundbreaking research.

Do I need to stop my current medications to join the trial?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that this educational intervention is safe for caregivers?

In a previous study, caregivers who participated in structured retrieval practice (SRP) showed better results during the practice sessions. This suggests that the treatment might be helpful and safe. Research has shown that caregivers felt supported during the study and did not report any major negative effects. As this is a Phase 1 trial, the main goal is to ensure the treatment's safety. While more information is needed, early results are promising for its safe use.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about Structured Retrieval Practice (SRP) for dementia caregivers because it offers a fresh approach to managing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) by focusing on caregiver education and memory reinforcement techniques. Unlike the usual strategies, which might focus on medication or generic education programs, SRP specifically targets the way caregivers learn and retain information about dementia behaviors. This method aims to improve caregivers' ability to manage symptoms effectively by enhancing memory retrieval, potentially leading to better outcomes for both caregivers and patients.

What evidence suggests that Structured Retrieval Practice is effective for improving dementia caregiver education?

Research has shown that Structured Retrieval Practice (SRP) helps caregivers of people with dementia by improving their knowledge and skills. Studies have found that SRP enhances caregivers' ability to handle the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. This trial will use a within-participant design, allowing caregivers to experience both the SRP intervention and a reading control condition. The method involves recalling information in an organized way, boosting memory and understanding. Caregivers using SRP have demonstrated better results in managing symptoms effectively compared to traditional methods. By focusing on real-life examples, SRP aims to make learning practical and useful for caregivers.678910

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for informal caregivers of individuals with dementia. Participants must be able to read and speak English, have access to a computer or tablet, be over 18 years old, and not have cognitive impairments that affect consent or task completion. Professional caregivers or those not currently caring for someone with dementia are excluded.

Inclusion Criteria

Informal caregivers
