Photodynamic Therapy for Sunspots

This trial tests how a new form of Levulan Kerastick, a topical solution used in photodynamic therapy, combined with blue light therapy, affects sunspots, also known as actinic keratosis (AKs). Researchers aim to observe how the body absorbs and reacts to this treatment when applied to sunspots on the forearms or face. Individuals with at least 4 AK lesions on their arms or 6 on their face, all within a small area, might be suitable for this study. Participants must be willing to avoid tanning and adhere to specific skin care routines during the trial. As a Phase 1 trial, the research focuses on understanding how the treatment works in people, offering participants the opportunity to be among the first to receive this new treatment.

Research has shown that Levulan Kerastick, when combined with blue light therapy, is generally safe, though some side effects may occur. Many patients experience severe stinging or burning during treatment. This affects at least 50% of patients treated on the face or scalp and about 9% of those treated on the arms. Despite these discomforts, the treatment does not cause scars or changes in skin color.

Levulan Kerastick is unique because it uses photodynamic therapy, a cutting-edge approach that activates a photosensitizing agent with light to target sunspots, also known as actinic keratosis. Unlike traditional treatments like cryotherapy or topical creams, which can take weeks to work, Levulan Kerastick offers the potential for quicker results by directly targeting abnormal cells with precision. Researchers are excited about its ability to specifically activate in the treated area, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy skin and potentially reducing recovery time. This innovative mechanism could make managing sunspots more effective and convenient for patients.

Studies have shown that Levulan Kerastick combined with blue light therapy effectively treats actinic keratosis (AK), which are rough, scaly patches on the skin caused by sun damage. One study showed that up to 100% of AK spots cleared without leaving scars or changing skin color. Another study found that after just one treatment, 66% of patients had all AKs on their face completely cleared. Additionally, two treatments led to an 89%–91% clearance rate after three months. Overall, Levulan Kerastick with photodynamic therapy (PDT) effectively removes these skin lesions. Participants in this trial will join one of two cohorts, based on the location of the AK lesions—either the face/forehead or the upper extremities—to evaluate the treatment's effectiveness.¹²⁴⁶⁷
